Sonik Kicks Paul Weller; Universal/Island Record
When rock stars of a certain age work hard to maintain the physical image they enjoyed at 25 - Iggy Pop or Alice Cooper spring to mind - they're in danger of becoming rock cartoons. There's nothing wrong with that - it's all a bit of fun - but more often than not, when the look remains stubbornly "1975", so does the music.
Which makes Paul Weller unusual. Because while there is no bigger rock caricature in the UK, from his impossible washboard stomach to the feathered barnet and après-ski tan, Weller appears to have evolved musically in the past five years through a series of ruminative, experimental solo projects - in a manner more in keeping with those "ex" rock stars such as Peter Gabriel or Elvis Costello, who stopped being cool years ago…

February 13, 2012 11:00 AM ET Paul Weller is one of Britain's most prolific rockers, with a rich discography spanning 11 solo discs, six records with Style Council and six albums with the seminal mod punk band the Jam. Weller's latest album, the eclectic and experimental Sonik Kicks, will hit stores in the United States on March 27th. You can stream a preview of "That Dangerous Age," a highlight from the album, now.
Rolling Stone recently caught up with the dapper songwriter to chat about the new record, his plans to play some special shows in New York and his refusal to consider offers to bring back the Jam for reunion shows.
A few of the songs on your new album, Sonik Kicks, have this sort of pulsing krautrock groove. How did you get interested in that sort of sound?
I don't know, really. I mean, it's just another influence amongst many. But I guess it sort of stems from the from the Neu! records. And mainly from them…
Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders has also remixed Paul Weller's comeback single 'That Dangerous Age'. The track is set to be released as a single on March 11 and will also be accompanied by a remix from Ladytron as well as a live version of new track 'Green'.
Paul Weller and Public Image Ltd. have joined the list of acts booked to celebrate BBC 6Music’s 10th anniversary next month.
Weller will partake in the Lauren Live at Maida Vale sessions on Tuesday March 13th, with John Lydon and Public Image Ltd. performing as special guests at 6Music’s live event in London’s Southbank on March 16th.
“Paul Weller and Public Image Limited are fantastic additions to our 10th Anniversary celebrations,” Paul Rodgers, editor, BBC Radio 6 Music has said. “These are important and influential artists with a rich heritage and contemporary relevance, and are great examples of music that Radio 6 Music represents.”
As previously reported on Live4ever, the digital radio station will play host to three concerts at the Southbank Centre in London on March 16th, with Laura Marling and Lianne La Havas performing in the Purcell Room, while Gruff Rhys, Anna Calvi and Beth Jeans Houghton will play the Queen Elizabeth Hall, whose Front Room will also be t…
On March 11th, Weller will release 'That Dangerous Age', the first single to be taken from his forthcoming album 'Sonik Kicks'.
Detailing the agonies of the frustrated middle-aged wage slave, 'That Dangerous Age' is set to be yet another Weller classic.
Speaking about the track, Paul said: "There was an inference that I was going through a mid-life crises, which I found really amusing: the clichéd notion of it. And that was the impetus for (the song) even though it isn’t really about that. It’s a bit tongue in cheek, too. I guess it’s also about how society views people of a certain age. For me, does it really matter what age you are? It’s what's up there in your soul that matters."
Stay tuned for full tracklistings and pre-order details coming soon.
'That Dangerous Age' will be hitting radio stations from Monday (February 13), and precedes the release of 'Sonik Kicks' on March 19th plus Weller's 5 night run…
Enjoying a constant critical high and a never ending creative peak, Paul Weller continues to push the boundaries with Sonik Kicks. The album is the follow up to the Mercury Prize Award nominated Wake Up The Nation and is Paul's eleventh solo album. Once again, it's his best yet.
Sonik Kicks features fourteen brand new tracks and includes special guest appearances from both Noel Gallagher and Graham Coxon. With Sonik Kicks Paul Weller once again shakes up his palate and stirs his influences anew. He mixes pop art punch with soulful communication; jazzy explorations into psychedelia and dub with razor-sharp melodies and abstract soundscapes with clear- eyed forest-folk.
The Yep Roc Store is excited to offer Weller fans in the US the first chance to pre-order Sonik Kicks on CD and LP. In addition, the store is offering an expanded deluxe edition that includes bonus songs, a DVD featuring interviews and music videos, and an exclusive Sonik Kicks t-shirt. Check out all the great…
